What Is Topamax?
A prescription drug generally used to treat epilepsy and in the prevention of migraine headaches, Topamax claims that you will be able to achieve weight loss according to some. Now in the prescription world, it is not actually used for this. But they say that Topamax has been used in clinical studies, and the weight loss has been a sort of side effect in up to 16% of adults and 21% of children. Isn’t that supposed to be a bad thing? And frankly speaking, with such small numbers actually seeing this, is it even clinically proven at all?
Frankly speaking, Topamax is not actually FDA approved for weight loss, and oftentimes, it has been shown to promote too much weight loss, which is not healthy in growing bodies. It promotes too much weight loss in those who it affects in that way, which is again about 16-21%, which is not by any means significant. Those who do not have epilepsy or migraine headaches should never be taking this prescription for any given reason, let alone in hopes of weight loss.
Topamax is not considered to be a good choice for weight loss results. It has common side effects being that it affects the brain such as memory loss or difficulty concentrating. Studies have shown that it has been effective in those who have type 2 diabetes specifically to lose weight. However, with all of the side effects, it is not something to take lightly. There are situations in which it may be acceptable for this off label use. But that is to be determined by a doctor and no one else. We would not actually recommend it due to low rates of success and all of the problems.
